Kia Motors Corporation is a famous and second-largest (after Hyundai) South Korean carmaker with headquarters in Seoul. Kia is also the oldest South Korea’s car producing company.

Founded in June, 1944, the company originally manufactured steel tubes and bicycle parts. In 1951 it launched production of bicycles and gradually changed it to production of motorbikes, trucks and, finally, cars in 1974, after the first Kia production plant was unveiled in 1973. Within 1981-1986, the company was forced out of car production due to military dictatorship and switched to light truck production. In 1986, Kia restarted car production and since then has been expanding its markets in Korea and worldwide, selling its vehicles in America since 1994 and in Europe since 1991.

In 2005 Kia Motors became Europe-oriented, paying much attention to the design and consequently hiring Peter Schreyer to be in charge of the company’s design innovations.

In 2010, Kia unveiled its production plant in Georgia, USA, and is planning to build another one in Mexico by 2016. Besides the numerous Kia options of civil cars, SUVs and crossovers, the company has been producing a range of military vehicles since 1976.

In 2014, Kia Soul compact car drew international attention when Pope Francis drove this model during his visit to South Korea.

The name Kia can be roughly translated from Korean as ‘the one who comes from Asia’.

Today, the company’s model range includes a vast choice of cars, SUVs and MPVs, including the popular Cee’d hatchback, the Cerato saloon, hatchback and coupe, the eco-friendly Optima Hybrid, the renowned Sportage and the world-famous Soul.

In 2014, Kia’s global sales increased by 5.9 % giving a total of 2.907.757 vehicles sold worldwide. The ever-increasing amount of sales means that a vast number of Kia models are affordable either as brand-new or pre-owned.
